Lotus and ornamental swirls on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo covers the shoulder, centred on a lotus flower with shaded petals and a dotted, mandala-like inner pattern. Curling scrollwork, paisley-style leaves and dotted lines extend outward across the shoulder and upper back. The linework is bold and the shading is soft, with the composition balanced around the central flower.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Inspector Ruth Halloran had been told to check every bag with cloth in it, so when the shawl came off the belt she unfolded it across the steel counter and let the strip light find the lotus at its centre. Black ink on pale wool, petals shaded grey as though they were still opening. Out from the flower the paisley leaves curled towards the edges, as if the person who drew them had meant them to leave the cloth altogether.

The man who owned it, Anton Verrier, stood with his hands in his coat pockets and said his aunt had stitched the pattern from memory of a river crossing forty years ago. Ruth bent closer. The dots in the inner ring were not random. They ran in pairs, then threes, then a long broken line that bent round the petals and stopped at a small knot of black ink, the way a path stops at a ford.
Her form asked for weight, fibre content and declared value. She weighed the shawl, cut nothing, and ran her fingers along the hem for anything hard. Nothing. Only the swirls, the dots, and the sense that the scrollwork at the shoulder edge pointed somewhere specific, towards the map pinned above her desk that the crossing used for its own patrols on the water. She had stared at that map for six years and never once noticed the ford was marked with a knot.
She stamped the declaration, pushed the papers across, and folded the shawl back along its old creases. Ornament, she wrote in the box for purpose, which was true enough, and she let him go with the river still folded inside it.
