Mandala tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black mandala sits on the forearm, built from layered petal shapes, scrolls and fine radial detail. The linework is thin and even, with some areas of dotted shading inside the design. The tattoo is shown in close crop against pale skin, with a navy striped top and a hand with red nails in the frame.

The galley of the Marguerite Lind smelled of scorched onion by six, and you had learned to ignore the swing of the pans on their hooks. Halvorsen wanted porridge before the watch changed, and the sea was coming up grey past the porthole. You laid the spice tins out on the steel counter in a ring, the way your mother used to arrange her jars on the oilcloth in Hull, each tin a petal around the nutmeg grater at the centre.

Cardamom, fennel, black pepper, and the dented saffron box with its brass hinge no bigger than a fingernail. You counted them twice because the ship rolled and the ring wanted to slide apart. The pattern only held if you kept your wrists low and your knees soft, so you bent with the motion and let the stove take the weight. A gull struck the glass, slid away, and was gone. Halvorsen knocked to say the bilge pumps were roaring again, and you told him the porridge would be ready when the bowls were.
When the watch came down you served it in a ring of tin bowls along the table, and the men argued over whose spoon was whose. Nobody noticed that you had set the saffron box at the top, facing the door, where the lamp caught the brass. Your father's initials were scratched on its lid in a small looping hand. He had run the same route for thirty years, and you had never once asked him why he kept an empty bowl at the centre of the table.
You left that bowl empty too.
