He sent a steward down to your workshop by the river with a single instruction: something to make him glad when he is sad, and sad when he is glad. You have turned that over for three days, working at a disc of silver no wider than a thumbnail, and nothing has come to you but the ferry bell across the water.

Then the old tanner from the next street comes in, smelling of lime, and asks what you are working on. You tell him. He laughs until he coughs, then lowers himself onto your upturned crate and says his grandfather used to say the same thing about the Nile in flood. The water rises over the fields and takes the goats and the fences, and everyone swears the valley is finished. Then it drops, the mud goes black and rich, and the barley stands taller than a man.

You take your finest point and cut the letters small enough to sit beneath a pearl's shadow: this too shall pass. The strokes are even and plain, with nothing that would catch the light and pull the eye. Before you hand it over you rub soot into the grooves so the words read clearly. The king turns the ring once, then twice, then closes his fist around it, and for the first time since you came to the palace, nobody asks you for anything else.
