Botanical vine and hibiscus tattoos on the arm

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a blue vest top sits in a car, with her face cropped below the nose. A shaded vine of leaves and small flowers runs across her shoulder, and a larger hibiscus bloom sits on the upper arm, both rendered in grey tones. A further dark tattoo is visible on her forearm below a gold watch, and the image is taken close up with soft natural light.

Dear Nell,

The hibiscus came up through the cracked flagstones of the old orangery the week after the men left with their scaffolding, and I have been sitting with it every evening since, the way you sit with a letter you cannot bring yourself to answer. Grandfather always said nothing grows in a ruin, and he was right about most things, but he never met a hibiscus with a mind of its own.

Its trumpets open for one day only. Each morning I find a bloom gone pale and papery on the path, and each morning a new one has unfolded beside it, shaded crimson at the throat and grey where the light does not reach. I have started keeping them in a tin on the kitchen windowsill, pressed flat between the pages of your old atlas, because I could not bear to sweep them up.

Up on the east wall the vine has finally got over the parapet. Last Thursday it reached the lead gutter where the Lord's cousin carved his initials in 1911, and this morning a tendril had wound itself through the hole where the gargoyle used to be, leaves all the way down to the rooks' nests. Mr Harrow from the council says we must cut it back before the survey. I told him the castle has been falling down for four hundred years and a vine can have the last word.

Come at the weekend if you can. Bring the good secateurs, and leave the survey papers at home.

Your loving brother, Tom
