Mandala tattoo on a shoulder with a puppy

Geometric · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind holds a golden retriever puppy against her shoulder, and her long hair is pulled into a side braid. A black ink mandala with ornamental floral detail sits on her upper shoulder and is shown in fine, dense linework with solid areas of shading. The image is warm in tone with a plain, light background, and the tattoo is the only ink visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pup had gone through the hedge gap again, and the bell at Mossend had already rung noon by the time you reached the edge of the trees. Mrs Pargeter's golden pup was not the sort to stay put. It had cream-coloured ears and a habit of stopping to smell everything twice, so you followed the pressed grass and the small wet prints past the mill race, past the stile, and into the beeches where the village ended and the older wood began.

The trail ran in circles. You noticed only when the same split oak came up on your left for the third time, and then you saw the ring. Someone had cleared a round of ground under the trees and laid it with pale stones, a dozen of them, each set at an exact distance from the next. Within that was a second ring of smaller stones, and within that a star made of bark shavings. The pup sat in the very centre, panting, pleased with itself, its tail sweeping the leaf litter in slow arcs.

Nobody in Mossend admitted to building it. Old Ada at the shop said it was the wood's own work, that the beeches kept a pattern the way a sleeper keeps a dream. You knelt, gathered the pup against your chest, and it licked your chin with great seriousness. Turning to leave, you stepped on the outer stone without meaning to, and the whole design seemed to hum, very faintly, like a held breath let go. You walked home the long way, the pup heavy and warm, and you did not look back at the ring until the trees had closed behind you.
