Small crescent moon tattoo on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with long, wavy blonde hair is seen from behind, sitting on a grey bed with one arm raised. A small black crescent moon with fine outline linework and minimal detail sits on her upper arm. The plain white door and wall form a simple backdrop, and the tattoo is the clear focal point in the lower right of the frame.

The generator coughs twice in the marquee and dies, and somebody across the field shrieks with laughter. You are on your knees in the wet grass with a pin between your teeth, trying to save the hem of your sister's dress before the first dance. Ada is already crying, though she says it is the cold.

Your mother comes out with a torch that has gone the colour of weak tea. She hands you the box of hurricane lamps from under the stairs instead, the ones that smell of paraffin and last year's Christmas. 'Light the ones along the wall,' she says, 'the moon will do the rest.' You look up and there it is, thin as a fingernail above the oak, a crescent so fine you nearly miss it.
You carry the lamps down the lane to the barn one at a time, gravel loud under your boots. Tomasz is up a ladder fixing bunting and swearing softly in Polish at a knot that will not give. The guests drift out of the marquee in their good shoes and stand about in the dark pretending not to be frightened. Nobody can find the cake. Your aunt says the cake was never going to survive a Cornish wedding anyway.
When the last lamp catches you stop at the gate and count them. Eleven, and the moon makes twelve. Ada comes down the path holding her skirt in both fists, the hem still crooked where you pinned it, and she takes your hand without a word. The light is poor, but it is enough to see faces, and the moon hangs over all of them like something drawn very carefully and then kept.
