Fine line script word on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black script word reading free is tattooed on the inner wrist of a hand that rests against a sleeping lion cub. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering sitting centrally on the skin. The photograph is in natural colour, with green grass and the pale tones of the cub and skin, while the ink itself is solid black.

The cub came to us in a feed sack, tucked into the back of a bread van on a Tuesday, and by Thursday he had decided my shin was his mother. Nobody at Hollin Edge had the heart to correct him. We kept him in the paddock behind the barn where the grass grows long enough to hide a boot, and every afternoon I sat on the warm ground with my back against the fence post and let him climb over my knees like a sack of wet sand that wanted to be loved.

The papers came in October. Barrow Vale Reserve would take him in the spring, once he was big enough to hunt for himself, and the word printed on the form was release. Mags read it over my shoulder and said it was a good word, the best one on the page, and I said it would be better if I believed it.
On the last morning he would not come off the grass. He wedged himself against my side with his eyes shut and one heavy paw resting over my wrist, and I did the sums the way you do when you do not want the answer. Then I took the transport slip from the clipboard, wrote the word on the back of it in biro, and signed my name in the box marked witness.
Spring came and the gate stood open. He padded down the track, stopped, looked back once at the fence where I stood, then went on into the long grass until the colour of him was lost in it. I kept the slip in my coat pocket for years, soft as cloth from handling, and every so often I read that one word again, the way you check a thing is still there.
