Colourful back and thigh tattoos with a cat
Traditional · Back · Colour · Photo
A woman with long blonde hair, seen from behind and turned towards a cat held against her shoulder, wears black lingerie. Her large back tattoo has bold outlines and solid fills in red, orange, green and black, showing a flower-like bloom and dark swooping shapes that may be wings or feathers. A further tattoo with similar colours is visible on her thigh, and the soft indoor lighting and bedroom setting keep the focus on the artwork.

Sit closer, the wind up here takes half of what I say, so you'll have to lean in like a lamb at the ewe. No, that's the last of the barley bread, eat it while it's warm. Now. My grandmother told this one at the Hollow Gate, where the road goes over the top and the snow comes early.

There was a hawk called Sorrel-Wing who lived on the ridge above the gate, and her feathers were so black they seemed to drink the light. Every spring she flew down into the valley to a garden of peonies that belonged to a widow named Ysolde Brand. The flowers were red as a cut lip and orange at the heart, and Sorrel-Wing loved them more than she loved mice or sleep.
One year the frost came in the wrong month and killed every bloom but one. Ysolde wept over the black stalks, and the hawk, who had never once given anything away, took the last bud in her talons and carried it up the pass through a storm that broke three shepherds' fences. She set it on the cold rock by the gate and sat over it all night with her wings spread wide to keep the wind off.
In the morning the bud had opened into a bloom as big as a cartwheel, green-veined and burning. Sorrel-Wing lay stiff beside it, her feathers fanned out like a shawl. When the widow climbed up looking for her flower, she found the bird and the peony lying as one shape, and the shepherds say that is why the gate peonies still bloom through snow, and why a hawk's shadow falls across them every dusk.
