Black and grey mandala tattoo with dotwork shading on the outer thigh of a person in white denim shorts.

Mandala tattoo on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A radially symmetrical mandala with layered petals and a dense central rosette sits on the outer thigh. Fine black linework defines the petals and inner patterns, while stippled dotwork shading fades out around the outer edge. The image is a close crop in warm, even light against an orange wall, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The windfalls had been lying in the long grass since Tuesday, and by Saturday the wasps had found every one. I knelt by the crate and took the worst of them, split it across the middle with my thumbs the way Uncle Ned had taught me, and there it was: a star of seed chambers, five pale petals tucked inside the skin, each one nested against the next.

He had shown me that trick with every apple he ever handed me as a boy, and he brought the same patience to the orchard. Forty-one trees on the south slope at Coldharbour, planted by his father, and none of them pruned since the spring he went into hospital. I cut back the suckers with a borrowed saw and counted the rows aloud so I would not lose my place. Down by the lane a tractor ploughed the Pryce field, its sound rising thin and even, like someone humming through their teeth.

In the bottom drawer of the kitchen dresser I found his ledger, and tucked behind it a sheet of graph paper with a flower drawn on it, more petals than any flower should have. Concentric rings, each petal shaded in short strokes, the centre packed so tight the pencil had gone shiny. Round the outside he had scattered dots, thinning toward the margin the way light leaves the grass after six. Underneath, in capitals: WHEN I'M GONE, CUT IT ACROSS.

I pinned the sheet to the gatepost against the wind and spent the afternoon gathering every windfall that had split clean. By dusk there was a crate of them on the tailgate, each one opened like a small lit window with its seeds in their neat chambers. I left the drawing where it was. The apples would be jam by Monday, and I did not need paper to remember how the middle of a thing was built.
