Mandala tattoo on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large radial mandala with layered petals, dotted rings and a central medallion covers the outer thigh. The linework is fine and even, and the single brown ink tone gives it a soft, henna-like look. The sharp focus sits on the tattoo, with a dark knit jumper and blurred autumn foliage around it, and a few small ring-and-finger designs are also visible on the hands.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Right, sit down, the lot of you, because Mr Haddow never let anybody leave until the bell, and I'm not having it said I broke that rule at my own reunion. You all remember Margaret Wyre. She sat by the radiator in Form 4B and drew on everything. Pencil on the backs of her hands, biro on her plimsolls, and every exercise book had a circle in the corner that was never the same circle twice.

Mr Haddow caught her once with a pair of compasses out on the desk, and instead of sending her to the head he pulled up a chair and asked what the circles were for. She said they were the town drawn from above, petals for the streets that ran out from the market square, and the little dots were the houses where people had stopped speaking to each other. He studied it a long time, then said it was the best map he'd ever been shown and he'd like it back by Friday, with the petals counted.

She never handed it back. Her mother moved them to Leeds the next summer, and the last I saw of Margaret she was standing at the bus shelter with a rolled-up sheet under her arm, face turned into the wind, tracing circles on the air with one finger.

So I went and looked at the market square last month, and I counted the petals. Twelve, same as hers. And you know what? The dots are still there, one for every house. Go on, have another biscuit. The bell's coming.
