Black ornamental mandala tattoo in a geometric and dotwork style on a woman's upper thigh, with white fabric draped beside it.

Black mandala tattoo on the thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large black mandala sits on the outer upper thigh, built from layered petal shapes, scalloped rings and a central circle of dots. The linework is bold and even, with fine dotted detail filling the inner petals and ring borders. The ink is solid black against the skin tone, and the composition fills the thigh, with a white fabric drape and silver rings framing the scene.

Dear Mags, you'll laugh at me, but I have finally stopped pretending I can sew. The lace I bought off the Chapel Street stall is wrapped round the lamp in the back room now, and the lamp is the only thing in this flat that doesn't complain about it. Mr Okonedo at the dance hall says the Saturday band wants a backdrop, something with a sun in it, and I said I'd have a go before he found someone with a steadier hand.

So I drew it the way Nan drew her rugs, starting in the middle and working out. A ring of little dots first, twelve of them, because you can't go wrong with twelve. Then a scalloped circle round those, then petals, one row and then another, each one with a pointed tip and a tiny dot where the lines meet, so the eye has somewhere to rest. By the fourth ring my pencil had gone blunt and I was counting under my breath like a sewing machine. The whole thing came out the width of a tablecloth, and nobody could say it wasn't lovely.

When I carried it down on Friday the hall was empty except for the caretaker sweeping glitter off the floorboards. I pinned it to the wall above the stage and stood back, and the bulbs caught the black lines so the petals looked like they were opening one ring at a time. He leant on his broom for a long while. Then he said, that's the first thing in this hall that's never once been trodden on, and went back to his sweeping.

I'm writing this with my shoes off and a cup of tea going cold. Come Saturday, bring your good dancing shoes. The sun's up on the wall and I'd like you to see it before the crowd arrives.
