Mandala tattoo on upper arm, before and after
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The left photograph shows a finished black and grey mandala with a dense central flower, layered petals and leaf shapes wrapping around the upper arm. The right photograph shows the same design at an earlier stage, with purple stencil linework and partly filled black shading down the centre. The shading is solid in the finished piece and areas of fine grey detail are visible, set against a plain background.

The stove door had been cracked since before Ruth was born, a ring of iron roses around a black centre, and her mother used to say it looked like a flower that had been stepped on and kept anyway. In January, with the lambing shed empty and the yard gone to slush, Ruth pinned a sheet of greaseproof paper over it and went along the lines with a purple pencil, the way she had seen the feed merchant's man do on the back of a sack.

Tom came in stamping snow off his boots and asked what she was doing with his good scissors. She said she was cutting a stencil. He said the stove had been fine for thirty years. She said that was the problem, nothing had been drawn on it in thirty years, and she pushed a chair at him and made him hold the paper flat while she worked the outer petals.
By evening the sheet was a mess of purple lines and half-cut shapes. The middle would not sit. Every time she shaded the heart of the rose it went grey and muddy, and the leaves on either side looked pasted on. She sat with her cold tea until the range ticked and the window frosted over, and then she saw it: the frost on the glass had grown in rings from one point, and the dark centre was where the cold could not get in. She stopped trying to lighten it. She filled the middle solid and let the thin petals run out from it.
When Tom came back at dawn she was still at the table, the paper weighted down with the salt pot. He looked at it for a long time, then at the cracked stove. "That's the old thing," he said. "Aye," said Ruth, and she ran her thumb along the heaviest line until it held.
