Black mandala tattoo on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala covers the forearm, built from radiating starbursts, layered petal shapes and a central flower left as bare skin. The design is rendered in fine dots and clean black lines, with shading that gives depth to the geometric rings. The two photographs show the same forearm from different angles against a dark studio chair.

The lock-keeper at Stoke Pinder has watched you sit on the cabin step for an hour with a tin of ochre and a pot of fine brushes, not painting. 'Your father did the roses on the Ebb Tide,' he says, 'and he never once started at the edge.' You know this already. You have been trying to work out where the centre goes.

The roundel on the boat is a starburst of spokes, each ray ending in a tiny dot of white, then a ring of lobed petals, then another ring, until the outer edge looks like frost on a lock gate. Your father taught you to prick the pattern through cartridge paper so the dots would line up, and to leave the middle bare, because the middle belonged to whoever was steering. You spend the afternoon pricking holes row by row, and the rain comes in off the weir and softens the pencil lines.
By dusk the outer rings are done and the heart holds nothing but the grain of the wood. The gates groan. A bargee you do not know walks up the towpath with a torch, sees the pricked paper flapping from the roof, and says nothing for a while. Then he asks which way the boat is headed.
'Downstream,' you say. 'Same as always.' You press the stencil over the centre, dab the first dot, and leave the flower unfinished, a pale open circle for the river to fill in. It is the only place on the boat nobody can paint over.
