Mandala tattoo on upper back and neck
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman stands with her back to the camera, one arm raised to her head, showing a large symmetrical mandala tattoo that spans the nape of the neck and upper back. The mandala uses fine black linework and shading with ornate petal and lattice detail. The image is in black and grey tones, with a black bodysuit and a pale wall and door in the background.

Mr Pemberton would not let me near the bobbin frame until I could draw a rosette from memory, so I spent that winter at the kitchen table with a pencil and the back of a gas bill. Every petal had to answer the one opposite it, and every lattice had to hold its breath in the same place. He said a true rosette is a lie told perfectly, that the eye forgives almost anything except a wobble at the centre.

On the Thursday before the Goose Fair, a length of cloth came back from the Dorset orders with a rosette Mr Pemberton had worked himself, years before I came. Someone had pricked the wrong hole at its heart, one stitch out, so every spoke of it leaned a hair off true. The fault had sat in that lace since before my mother was born, and the customers loved it. They asked for it by name and paid extra for the crooked ones.
I asked him why he never fixed it. He ran his thumb along the edge slow as a clock hand and said perfection was only the first draft of a thing, and the second draft was where a person actually lived.
That night I unpicked my own rosette, a stitch at a time, until the thread lay in a little grey heap on the table. Then I pricked the centre again, deliberately wrong, and left it there to dry.
