Mandala with semicolon on a lower leg
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical mandala of layered petals, rings and radiating lines surrounds a central semicolon, with a dotted scalloped edge around the outside. The design is rendered in solid black linework with some dotwork accents and no shading. The ink is set against pale skin on a soft, evenly lit close-up of the lower leg.

Pass me that pipe and mind the lamp, the gulls have had the wick again. You want the story of the Mary Ellen's last good haul? Then you'll have to hear about Ada Trewin first, because she kept the net loft and the tide book, and no man in Porthgwidden ever argued with a woman holding both.

The year the pilchards stopped coming, the boats went out nine mornings running and came back riding high. The men sat on the harbour wall and talked about striking the season off the slate. Ada said nothing. She went up to the loft with a stick of chalk and drew on the boards a great ring, petals of wind folded inside petals, and round its edge she dotted little points where the spray would catch it. Then in the very middle she made a small curved mark, a comma sitting on top of a full stop. "That's a semicolon," she told the boys who came to gawp. "A full stop is a grave. This here is a breath. The sentence still wants its second half."
Abel Cary took the Mary Ellen out the next morning against his own father's advice, because he had never liked being told a thing was finished. He came back at dusk with the hold so heavy the water sat a hand below the gunwale, and he walked straight up the hill to the loft without washing the scales off his arms.
The chalk ring is still on those boards, faint now, and nobody has swept it. The men step round it when they come in with their nets, and none of them will say why.
