Maneki-neko cat on a thigh
Japanese · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A white maneki-neko lucky cat with red ears, a red collar and a raised paw sits centrally, with pink plum blossoms on either side and a gold coin with dark characters in front. The outlines are bold and dark, with flat fills and small highlights on the cat's eyes and coin. Bright red, pink, gold and green-tinged accents are set against the skin, and the tattoo fills most of the frame on the outer thigh.

Mind the step, it's worn to a dip by a hundred years of boots. Now then, you want to hear about Ada Quill and the cat in the window, or you want to stand there looking at the lamp? Both, I suppose. Sit.

The cat sat in the window of the chandler's shop at the bottom of Kettle Lane, and it had one paw up, always up, as if it were hailing somebody across the harbour. Ada's grandfather bought it off a Liverpool sailor for two shillings and a length of rope. The sailor swore it had been to Yokohama and back and had come home with a bad temper and a good eye for weather. Every morning Ada dusted its ears. Its collar was red and its face was painted with a little grin, and the gold coin pressed against its belly said something nobody in Kettle Lane could read.
The winter the lighthouse lamp failed, the boats came in blind. Ada went up the hundred and twelve steps with a lantern in one hand and the cat under her arm, because she said a fool would not come down a stair without a charm, and she was no fool. At the top she propped it facing the sea, paw lifted, plum blossom painted pink on the glass. Then she spent the night feeding the wick by hand.
When the first trawler slid past the rocks at dawn, the skipper swore the cat was waving at him. Ada says it was only waving at the weather. I've never been sure which of them she was lying to, and I have a feeling she was enjoying herself either way.
