Grey cat with teal eyes and pink bow
Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo
A grey tabby cat with teal eyes and a pink collar with a round tag fills the upper part of the design, with a large pink bow hanging at the right. Below, a pink rose and sprigs of purple lavender are set among green leaves. Bold black outlines, smooth colour fills and fine hatched shading on the fur give the piece a neo-traditional look, and the image is a close, straight-on view of the tattoo.

The cat had come up from the cold holds with the seed crates, and nobody on Thessaly Ring had a line for it in the ration ledger. Ines found it asleep on the lavender trays at the start of second shift, grey as ash, its teal eyes opening slowly at the sound of her boots. Round its neck was a pink collar and a tag no bigger than a thumbnail, engraved with a name she could just read under the grow-lights: Mossgiel.

She fed it from her own protein ration for three days and told the medic it was a sensor test. Mossgiel walked the hydroponic rows like a foreman, pausing at the rose bushes the botanists had grafted from a wild Earth cutting, nosing at the purple spikes until the leaves shook. The pink bow had been tied by someone careful, the loops even, the tails trimmed to neat points. Ines kept meaning to untie it and never did.
On the fourth night the chimes sounded the long descent warning, the one they hadn't used since the last supply ship failed to dock. Ines sat among the trays with the cat in her lap and turned the tag over. On the back, scratched small, was a coordinate and a date already a century old. Someone had sent this cat out here to wait for a ship that might never come, and it had waited long enough to learn the way to the warmest room on the station.
She untied the bow at last. It was the first thing she had ever kept from the stores that wasn't rationed, and she pinned it to the seed ledger, pink against the grey columns. Then she sat back down among the lavender. Mossgiel stretched out along her arm, unbothered by the silence overhead, and began to purr.
