Faceted cat head on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cat's face with pointed ears, yellow eyes, a pink nose and whiskers is tattooed on the inner forearm. The image is built from angular, faceted planes of teal, grey and white with bold black outlines and streaked shading. Colour dominates the piece, with a plain pale skin background and a dark wooden surface behind the arm.

The cat turned up at the school hall on the night of the reunion, sitting on the bottom step as if it had been invited. Nobody knew whose it was. It was grey and blue and white, with one ear notched at the tip and eyes the colour of old brass, and it watched the door the way the headmaster used to watch the back row.

Inside, the old pupils stood under the paper bunting and talked about the mill, the flood and who had married whom. Mrs Pell, who taught geography for thirty years, said the cat had a face like a broken window, all sharp planes put back together wrongly. Then the cat walked the length of the parquet, stopped under the trophy cabinet and sat down. Nobody spoke. The room went quiet the way a classroom does when someone is about to be caught.
Old Dacre went first. He had taken the register in 1979 and burned it in the boiler house, and he said so, loudly, to the cat. The cat blinked slowly. Then the others began, one confession after another: a stolen compass, a letter opened, a girl's name carved under a desk. Each time the cat closed its eyes, someone in the room stood a little straighter.
When the last of them had finished, the cat was gone. On the step lay a single slate tile from the roof, and the hall windows, for once, showed nothing but the people inside them.
