Maneki-neko lucky cat on upper back
Japanese · Back · Colour · Photo
A maneki-neko lucky cat sits upright with one paw raised and closed eyes, its body resting over a round gold coin that carries script lettering. The cat has bold black outlines with soft orange, pink and yellow shading, and a green collar with a small red bell detail. The design is centred on the upper back, near the shoulder blade, against plain skin.

The cat had sat on the shelf above the tea urn at Thornbury Road station since April, one paw raised towards the platform as though it were hailing a fare. Ruth, who ran the kiosk, dusted it on Mondays and never asked where it had come from. Its gold coin had worn to a paler shine where thousands of palms had brushed it for luck, and the looping letters across its belly had faded to a soft ghost of orange.

Then Daniel Okafor came in on a wet Tuesday with a carrier bag and the look of a man who had missed his own connection by a decade. He wanted a bacon roll and a timetable, and he kept glancing at the cat. "Is it for sale?" he asked. Ruth said everything was for sale except the urn. He paid eleven pounds in coins, counted out slowly from a purse with a broken clasp, and carried the cat under his coat like something that might bolt.
Three weeks later it was back on the shelf, with a pencilled note tucked beneath its raised paw. Ruth unfolded it while the kettle ticked. The writing was careful and small: My daughter named the coin Mum. She says the cat only wanted to be somewhere it could be seen. Ruth looked up at the window, where the 14:12 was drawing out, and for once she did not dust the cat at all.
