Geometric cat and roses on ribs
Geometric · Ribs · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows an orange cat seen in profile with a green eye, its head and tail built from angular, faceted shapes in shades of orange, red and brown. Two shaded red roses sit beneath the cat, with a small green leaf between them, and a dark outline surrounds the whole design. The bold colour and clean, angular forms stand out against the skin, with the design sitting along the side of the ribs.

The bread is already in the proving cupboard when you come through the back door at half four, and the ginger cat is already on the flour sacks, pretending she has been there all night. Mrs Okafor calls her Pilot because she sits like she is steering the place. You have never once seen her eat anything you put down for her, only the crust ends Mr Abbott slips her when he thinks nobody is looking.

The rose bushes out back came into bloom overnight, so the shop smells of rose water before the ovens are even lit. Mr Abbott wants rose-petal shortbread for the market stall, and you are sent up the stepladder for the tin of dried petals behind the nutmeg. The ladder wobbles. Pilot watches from the sacks, green eye narrowed, as you stretch. When you finally get the tin down the lid pops off, and petals scatter across the tiles, red as sealing wax.
You kneel to gather them. Pilot drops from the sacks without a sound and begins helping in her own fashion, lifting each petal delicately in her teeth and carrying it to the bin with enormous seriousness. You laugh until you have to sit down on the floor, and she sits beside you, unbothered, tail curled over her paws. By the time the windows go grey the petals are back in the tin and the shortbread is in the oven.
Mr Abbott comes in with the first tray, looks at the scattered floor, then at the cat, and says nothing about the mess. He slides a rose biscuit onto the cooling rack and, as the light comes through the shutters in long amber bars that split across her like facets of cut glass, he breaks off a corner and sets it on the tiles. Pilot looks at it for a long moment. Then she eats it, and you are fairly sure you have never seen anything so pleased with itself.
