Back · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon cat face with a red bow on top is drawn in black outline, with a few small dots for the eyes and whiskers. It is surrounded by black outline stars of varying sizes, some plain and some with small satellite stars scattered around them. The bow is the only colour, filled in red, while the rest is black linework on bare skin, shown from behind across the upper back.

Nobody in Pennick Harbour could remember when the white cat first started climbing the mast of the herring boat Constance, only that her red ribbon was always the first thing the gulls noticed. Mrs Oddie at the chandlery swore the cat had been counting. Every night after the last lamp went out on the quay, Pearl went up the rigging hand over paw and sat on the crosstree, bow lifted, tallying the sky.

The trouble started in October, when the fishermen said the sky had got untidy. Some stars were too large, others had faded at the edges, and a few seemed to have wandered off towards the Norwegian side. Pearl disagreed. She kept a list scratched into the mast with her claws, and she meant to prove it. For every star she found on the wet paint of the hull, she added a small one. For every reflection in the harbour, a larger one, until the whole deck was ringed with tiny outlines.

On the night of the gale, a bright one slipped its moorings and dropped into the water beyond the breakwater. Pearl watched it sink, then leapt from the bowsprit and went in after it. Old Tomasz Rudd, who had shouted himself hoarse, hauled her out by the scruff with a dripping net, and the star came up tangled in the mesh, glowing like a coin at the bottom of a fountain.

Next morning it hung in the wheelhouse on a loop of string, and Pearl slept beneath it with her bow dry at last. Nobody in the harbour argued with her list after that. They simply stopped going out without asking her first which stars were still where they should be.
