Hello Kitty with skull bow on upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A bold black outline of the Hello Kitty character head, with a winking eye, a small orange nose and whiskers. The bow on top is filled in red with a white skull at its centre, and the tattoo is shown on smooth skin with a dark background. Black linework dominates, with flat red, orange and white fills for colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The windfalls had been lying in the long grass since Tuesday, and by Friday the wasps had found every one of them. Dad said we had to clear the orchard before the press came up from Ledbury, or the cider would taste of vinegar and grievance. So I was on my knees at the bottom row with a bucket when the white cat came over the wall, red bow bobbing on her head like a cherry on a cake.

She belonged to nobody but the cottage across the lane, though everyone called her Mrs Fry's cat. A little skull sat in her bow, bone-white against the red, and she wore it the way the old women in our village wore their brooches, as a statement nobody was going to ask about. She sat down on my bucket, looked me over with one eye shut, and winked. I have never been so thoroughly judged by something with no mouth to speak of.

I worked around her. Every apple I lifted, she inspected, and every bruised one she knocked off the pile with a flick of her paw into the grass where the wasps could have them. By four o'clock I had made a fool of myself and she had made a pile of her own, six perfect plums lined up under the hedge like a bet she intended to collect.

When Dad's van rattled up the lane, the cat stood, stretched, and trotted off towards the cottage with her bow bright in the low sun. The skull grinned back at me over her shoulder. Dad asked who I'd been talking to. I said nobody, and left the plums under the hedge for whoever had earned them.
