Manta ray tattoo on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A manta ray with wings angled outwards and a long thin tail is tattooed on the upper back, with dark hair visible at the top of the frame. The ray is rendered in black and grey with soft shading along the wings and body to suggest depth and form. The tattoo fills the centre of the composition against plain, evenly lit skin.

Dafydd had told the bride's mother twice that the tide would turn at four, and twice she had smiled the way people smile at a man who knows boats but not weddings. So at quarter to four he cut the engine off Gull Stack and let the skiff drift, three bridesmaids in pale blue holding their skirts above the bilge water, the groom's brother swearing softly over a dropped bouquet.

The sea out there was the colour of wet slate, flat as a plate. Then the water bulged beside the hull, and a manta came up under the light, its wings unfolding the way a sheet is shaken out over a bed. Its back was dark as a bruise, its belly paler, and the long thin tail trailed behind like a bootlace. Nobody spoke. The bridesmaids stopped giggling. Dafydd heard his father's voice in his head, the old man who had netted rays off Porthleven before the rules changed: they come to a boat when someone aboard is about to be carried somewhere new.
The bride, Nell, had been pale all afternoon in a way he'd taken for nerves. She leaned over the gunwale and put her hand flat on the water. The ray turned, slow as a thought, and passed beneath her fingers so close that the pale of its belly brushed the surface.
"My grandad," she said, not looking up. "He used to say they were the sea's own wedding guests."
Dafydd started the engine when the ray had gone. Nobody asked him to turn back. At the quay the bride walked up the slip with her shoes in her hand, and the first thing she said to her husband was that she had seen the sea say yes.
