The swallows had found the gap above the wheelhouse door before Ada Lowe had finished her painting, and for a week she cursed them, mostly because the mud they carried dropped onto the brass. By the time the Marigold reached Ashwell Lock the nest was full of open beaks, and her father had stopped complaining about the mess.

Her father steered her down the Lenning Cut that spring, one hand on the tiller and the other pointing at the bank. Every lock keeper they passed had a joke about the birds, and every one of them asked whether she meant to sell the barge before the summer. She never answered. The swallows answered for her, skimming low over the water to snatch flies, then climbing with their forked tails open like scissors cutting a path to the sky.

In late August the fledglings wobbled along the cabin roof, and the old birds began to gather on the telegraph wire above the towpath. Ada watched them from the tiller, counting. Seventeen, then twenty-two. Her father came up beside her with two mugs of tea and said nothing, which was how she knew he had been counting too.

On the first grey morning of September the wire was empty. Ada stood at the bow with the cold metal of the rail in her palm and the nest silent above the door. Then a single swallow dropped from nowhere, its red throat bright as a coal, and settled on the tiller beside her hand, quite still, as if it were waiting to be told where to go.
