Tree and lake landscape inside a maple leaf on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A maple leaf outline frames a single tree in the centre, with a misty lake and distant hills shaded behind it. The tree and landscape are rendered with soft grey gradients and fine dark detail, while the leaf edges are solid black. The photograph is taken straight on, with the forearm filling the frame against a blurred background.

The lock keeper at Hatton has already shut the gate for the night, so you tie the barge up under the poplars and wait with the kettle on the little stove. Water slaps the hull. Somewhere across the cut a dog barks at nothing, and the traffic on the A41 rolls over the fields like weather.

The envelope has sat in the cupboard above the sink for three weeks, behind the tea caddy, because you did not want to open it on a day you had to be sensible. Inside is a leaf, pressed flat and gone the colour of weak tea, and a note from your brother in Ontario. He writes that the maples turned early this year. He has glued the leaf to card and painted a lake on it, a line of hills, and one tree standing at the water's edge, the leaf's points curling round it like the sides of a hand.

You hold it up to the window. The lamp from the towpath catches the varnish he has brushed over the paint, and for a moment the lake seems to move. You remember the summer you were nine, when Dad drove the two of you out to a cottage where the water was so cold it hurt your teeth, and Tom swore the tree on the point was the one he would climb when he came back. He never came back. He sent leaves instead.

At first light you untie the bow rope and let the barge drift past the lock keeper's cottage, then turn her north. You tuck the card into the logbook between the dates of the last two deliveries and do not look back at the poplars. The water ahead is flat and grey, and you think that is probably how the lake looks from the far side.
