Sit yourself down on the coal sacks, love, and keep one hand on the tiller while I talk. Forty years I worked this stretch of the Lark, and I'll tell you about the night Dennis Wray lost his pack to the weir. He carried it folded in his shirt pocket, the lid pushed back, five cigarettes stood up in a row so they'd not crush. Red and white box, with a little black crown on the front that he swore made him a king of the towpath.

That February the flood came up brown and fast, and we were lashed to the wall at Hollin Lock with the rope groaning like a cow. Dennis went out along the gunwale to free the stern line in the dark. His pocket gave way, and the pack skittered across the deck and dropped over the side. We heard it knock once against the hull, then the water took it under the sluice gate and that was that, or so we thought.
Next morning Nell Harker, the lock-keeper's girl, came down the bank with a stick and fished it out of the grille below the weir. Sodden as a dead bird, the card gone soft as bread. But when she prised the lid open, all five were still standing up in their row, swollen and brave. Dennis wouldn't smoke them. He dried the box on the stove and kept it on the shelf above the kettle until his hands shook too much to hold it.
When they cleared his cabin after the funeral, that pack was still there, dry as paper, every one of them standing straight. Nell kept it, and I'm told she never once let it fall. Now mind the bend ahead, because the current's stronger than it looks.
