Masked spirit in ink splatter on calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A pale pink masked face with dark stripes sits at the centre of a dense black ink splatter that spreads across the calf and drips downward. The black areas are solid and the splatter edges are irregular, while the mask has soft, smooth shading. The photo shows the leg from behind on a grey laminate floor, with the tattoo placed in the centre of the frame.

The ink came up through the drains of Greywater Quay the same week the pumps gave out, and the foreman sent you down with the lamp because you have the steadiest hands on the night shift and no fear of wet stone. Under the old printworks the black rises slowly, thick as tar, slopping against the brick and leaving splashes on every surface it reaches. By the third flight of steps the smell of linseed is strong enough to taste.

The spirit sits at the centre of the spill as if it was there first. A small pale face, mouthless, with three dark strokes slanting across each cheek, like someone brushed it onto wet paper and walked away. It does not speak. When you lower the bucket towards it, the ink draws back in a ring, politely, the way a crowd makes room at a funeral. You notice that the drips on the steps have thinned since you arrived.
Upstairs, the foreman wants the chamber sealed with concrete by dawn. He has a ledger open on the desk with the gallons tallied in a neat column, and the figures for the press room are already crossed through. You tell him the drains will clear by themselves if nobody stands in the way, and he looks at your wet boots for a long moment before he signs the order to leave it be. Nobody argues with the night shift about water.
At first light you go back down alone. The chamber is dry. The stone is clean, but on the wall above the old press there is a fresh blot of black in the shape of a face, shallow and patient, and the mask has settled into the brick as if it has always been part of the building. You set the lamp beside it, and for once the room is quiet.
