Small outlined tattoo of two cartoon gloved hands forming a red heart, placed on the lower leg just above the ankle.

Cartoon gloved hands forming a heart

Ankle · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two cartoon hands in white gloves, with their fingers curled to form a heart shape around a solid red heart in the centre. The outlines are black and of even weight, with light lines suggesting the fingers and folds of the gloves, and the gloves are left unshaded so the skin shows through. The small design sits on the lower leg above the ankle, with a bare foot in a silver strappy sandal below it against a light fabric background.

Now sit closer, because the wind off the common takes half of this, and I'll not shout it twice. The gloves came off the peg at the back of the Pinfold show tent, between the hoop-la and the swingboats, where old Ransom kept them wrapped in tissue. Four pairs of white cotton, starched stiff, that once belonged to a mime called Ezra Pell. He could bring a whole crowd to silence without a word, and every night at the close he did the same small thing, bringing his two gloved hands together until the fingers curled into a heart, with a red silk one tucked in the middle that he'd sewn himself.

Nell sold candyfloss in the booth next door, and she watched that heart every night from behind her sugar drum. She never once asked him what it meant. Then came the Sunday the fair was to pack up for Ludlow, and Ezra was gone before the lorries rolled. He left the gloves hanging on her tent pole with a note pinned to the cuff that said only, keep the shape steady, the wind does the rest.

That evening the wind did come, hard off the dark field, and the gloves went up over the big wheel like two startled birds. Nell climbed the scaffold in her stockinged feet to fetch them down, and when she got them back to the ground her own hands had already folded into that shape without her thinking. Out on the empty common the last generator coughed and died, and she stood there in the cold, holding nothing but the heart she'd been given, until the caravan lights came on across the field one by one.
