Mason jar and radishes on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A mason jar with leafy greens sprouting from its top sits at the centre of the design, with radishes or similar root vegetables clustered at the base. The lines are loose and sketchy, with hatching and stippled shading that gives the jar and foliage some texture. The tattoo is in black ink and greys, wraps around the outside of an upper arm, and fills most of the frame against a plain background.

Dear Ivy,

The radishes came up before the sea fog had lifted off the bay, so I pulled the lot and stood them in the sink like a row of little red lanterns. You will laugh, but Mr Pascoe in number four ate three of them raw with his breakfast and then asked me for the recipe. I told him there is no recipe, only the jar and the patience. Your mother's jar, the one with the bent lid and the word MASON stamped crooked on the glass, is still on the top shelf where you left it.

The brine has been working since Tuesday. I packed the radishes in with dill from the window box and a scrap of horseradish Mrs Eddowes brought round from her allotment, and I wedged the greens in at the mouth so they would stand up out of the liquid. They look like a little wood growing out of the glass. The lodgers keep asking whether the jar is for the winter market or for the bar, and I tell them neither, it is for the kitchen, where it has always been.

The boat came in yesterday without you on it, and I did not go down to the harbour to see who was stepping off. I sat at the table and listened to the brine ticking, which I know is only the lid settling. Anyway, I am putting the jar in the cellar now, behind the mangles, and I will open it at Christmas if you are home. If you are not, I will open it anyway and eat the lot on my own, standing up, with the window open to the sea.

Love, Nan
