Matching 'always' script tattoos on two forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two arms are crossed, each showing a single black script tattoo of the word 'always' in thin, flowing lettering. The left tattoo sits on the forearm near the elbow and the right one on the inner forearm near the wrist, so the pair appears matched. The background is plain and pale grey, with soft, even lighting and skin tones that keep the black ink clearly visible.

Brother Anselm,

The abbot has taken the copying room from me until Lent, so I write this on the back of a spoiled leaf and hope you can read my hand. The boy who grinds the ink has a cough, and the ink is thick with cold, so every letter I make comes out heavier than I meant it to.
Yesterday I finished the psalter for the Lady chapel. Forty folios of gold and blue, and at the foot of the last page the donor asked me to write one word in his dead mother's script, a word he would not say aloud. I wrote it thin and slanting, the way she wrote her letters to him when he was a boy in Ely. It took me three attempts. The first was too proud, the second too sad, and the third I simply let the pen run out to the edge of the vellum and stop.
You will laugh, but the word is "always". I have written it a hundred times in the margins of other men's prayers, and never once did it look like a promise. Father Cuthbert says a scribe who copies the same word in the same hand for years comes to believe it.
I am sending you the spoiled leaf, with the word cut from it. Keep it somewhere dry. If the sea takes you, at least the word will have been written by someone who meant it.
Your brother in ink, Edric
