Cursive script tattoo on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop shows a person's upper thigh, with a black dress held up by one hand. A single line of thin, cursive script runs horizontally across the skin in black ink. The lettering is small and centred in the frame against a plain white background, with a soft grey cardigan at the top edge.

The postcard you sent from Dieppe arrived on Tuesday with the sea still in its creases, and Mr Pryce at the post office read the French line on the back out loud, very slowly, as if it might bite him. I told him it was only a sentence about a boat. He did not believe me, and I suspect you would rather I did not believe you either.
I have carried the phrase around all week the way you carry a tune. Your hand slopes like a fence in a gale, and I could not tell where the first word ended and the second began, so I guessed, and then guessed again. I copied it onto the back of my ration book, beside the price of paraffin, and every time I reached for the kettle my eye fell on it.
Father says Dunmore will have its first television set by Whitsun, which means the Hall will fill with people who want the news in a voice they already know. I have told him I shall stay in the back room with the wireless, like a good Methodist. You would laugh at that. You always said I was built for the bench by the harbour wall, counting the trawlers in with their smell of diesel and herring.
Write back in English, please, or at least translate the whole thing this time. I will not be made to guess a second year running.
Yours in the wet and the wind, Margery
