Sketchy heart on a wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart outline is drawn on the inner wrist of a hand that is raised near the top of the frame. The linework is loose and doubled, giving a hand-sketched look, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The plain light background and soft, even lighting keep the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The printers in Hab Nine can produce any line you ask for, perfectly even and perfectly dead. Mother Oyelaran says so every time the inspector comes through with his clipboard. So when the hydroponics bay fails and the drawing committee asks for something to tape above the seed lockers, you take a pencil from the stores cupboard and draw it yourself, twice over, because your hand shakes and the shake is the only honest thing left on this deck.

It is a heart. Nobody has asked for a heart since the first generation planted the orchards. You draw it fast, the way Nan used to scribble on the backs of envelopes, the outline looping round and back on itself until the lines seem unable to agree where the shape should end. The inspector frowns at it. Then he taps the paper with one finger and says the lines look as though they were meant to be there, and that is a different thing from being printed.

By the next cycle, someone has been marking the crates with small doubled hearts in pencil, one on every lid, and the ledger clerks cannot agree who is doing it. You find yourself waiting for the inspector to come back and ask whose hand it was, and you find you do not mind being the one who answers.

That night you lift the pencil again and draw one more heart on the inside of a locker door where nobody will look. You leave the top of it open, the line trailing off toward the hinge, where it could still go either way.
