Matching angel wings on two wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two inner wrists are shown side by side, each with a black angel wing tattoo with feather detail drawn in outline. The linework is fine and the wings are rendered in black and grey with no colour ink. The hands are clasped in the centre of the frame, with a car interior and denim in the soft background.

Nobody in Gullhaven would take a boat past the rocks without a feather from the Marrow sisters, and the two of them were never seen apart. Ada was the elder and tied the knots. Bet was the younger and did the fine work. Between them they made the little grey wings that sailors had stitched into their collars, each barb drawn as fine as a hair.

The winter the herring failed, a ketch called the Thrift came limping into harbour with her crew asleep on their feet and her galley cold. The cook had gone over the side in a squall and nobody had thought to count the dead. That night Bet sat up with the bosun's boy, rubbing goose grease into his chilblains, and heard him say the sea had taken the wings off every man who broke his word to it.
Ada went down to the quay at first light with a pot of ink and a bundle of gull feathers. She pressed one to each of the boy's wrists and drew the outline while the tide turned. She worked slowly, because a wing drawn in a hurry lifts the wrong way. By noon the water lay flat, and the Thrift sailed with her crew bearing the same marks, palms turned toward each other as they hauled the lines.
The sisters never took payment. They asked only that the sailors press their hands together when they prayed, so the wings would meet in the middle. Every spring afterwards, a gull feather lay on the Marrow step where the tide had left it, and nobody in Gullhaven ever had to ask whose it was.
