The gulls had been fighting over the fish stall since before dawn, and Marjorie Teague had given up shouting at them. She sat on the harbour wall with a tin of boiled sweets and watched the tide pull back from the slipway, leaving a skin of weed and broken shell. Her brother Alfie was out past the breakwater in the Constance, and the wind had gone round to the north-west, which meant nothing good.

A boy from the chandlery came running along the quay with a parcel under his arm. It was a bird's wing, pinned in brown paper, sent up from the Scillies by a fisherman who swore it had come down on his deck in the night. The feathers were grey at the tips and black at the root, and one of them was bent like a handle. Marjorie took it from him without a word, because she had already decided it was a sign and she did not want to argue with a sign.

She climbed down to the water's edge and held the wing up against the sky. Out beyond the wall, a single grey shape rose from the swell, wheeled once and came in low over the Constance, which was just then turning for home. Marjorie pressed the wing to her own wrist, as if she could sew it there, and the boat came in on the flood with its sail down and nobody waving from the stern.
