Mo had kept the letter for nineteen years, folded inside the back cover of her atlas, and when she finally read it aloud in the Kirkby village hall the room went quiet in the way it only does for gossip. Forty-one of them had come back for the reunion. The tea urn ticked. Somebody's child slept under the trestle table with a raffle ticket in its fist.

The letter was from Ruth, who had left school at sixteen with a rucksack and a grudge against the bus timetable. It said only that she had found the woman again. When they were eleven, the two of them had sat on the wall by the ford and drawn her in biro: a tall figure with hair to her knees, standing in the water and not drowning. They swore that when they were old enough they would both carry her on their arms. Ruth had gone to Leeds and kept her promise. Mo had kept the drawing and nothing else.
Ruth came in late, smelling of rain, and rolled her sleeves up at the hatch without saying hello. The figure was there on the inside of her forearm, thin and dark, her hair falling past the wrist. Mo pulled her cardigan back and said nothing, because her own arm was bare and the other women were watching it the way they had once watched the two of them cross the playground holding hands.
When the hall emptied they walked down to the ford in the dark, the water loud over the stones. Ruth stood in the shallows with her arms held out at her sides, and after a while Mo stepped in beside her and did the same, and the two of them stood like that until the cold came up through their shoes and the moon found the water.
