Two arrows on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arrows sit side by side on the skin, one pointing left and one pointing right, each with a detailed arrowhead and feathered fletching. The linework is fine and precise, with light shading along the shafts that gives them a subtle dimensional look. The ink is black and grey on pale skin, and the blurred background of a studio or room keeps the focus on the tattoo.

You are the first one in, as always, and the building still smells of yesterday's rye. The flat loaves go in before anything else because they bake fastest, and by the time you have slid the last tray onto the rack, the window above the bins has turned from black to the colour of weak tea.

Dinah's van comes round the back at twenty to five with its headlamps still on, rattling over the cobbles like a dropped tin tray. She does not say good morning. She never does before the first delivery. She leans against the doorframe with her clipboard and taps the sheet, and in the margin are two arrows you drew in biro last Thursday, one pointing out towards the high street and one pointing back in at the ovens. It was a joke about who was doing what. Neither of you has laughed at it since.

The argument is old and small. She wants the rounds finished before the school bell, and you want the sourdough out while it still sings when you tap its base. Every morning you both make the same case, and every morning the loaves get stacked, the crates get loaded, and the van pulls away with its brake lights smeared red in the mist.

Today you take the pen from behind your ear and draw a third arrow beside the other two, pointing at neither of you, straight up at the square of sky going pale above the yard. She reads it, snorts, and holds out her hand for the first crate. You pass her the warmest loaf on the rack, and for once neither of you says which way it should go.
