A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming down on Carrow Street market since before seven, and by eleven the awnings sagged like wet sails. Maud Pell had sold nothing but a bruised pear and two pairs of gloves. She stood at the back of her trestle with her hands tucked under her arms, watching the gutter carry a cardboard lid towards the drain, and thought about the arrows.

Her brother Tom had drawn them in the ledger the spring before he left for the coast. One arrow pointed up, one pointed down, with a ring between them like a bead on a string. "Up for what you hope for," he said, "down for what you carry. The ring is where they meet." He had laughed at his own seriousness, then pressed the pen into her palm so she could copy it. She had done it on the back of a receipt, which was now pulp in her coat pocket.

A boy in a yellow cagoule stopped at the stall and asked whether the umbrellas were for sale. She said two pounds each, and he counted coins out of a sandwich bag, dropped a penny in a puddle and fished it out with a stick. He bought the smallest umbrella, the one with a broken spoke, and thanked her as if she had given him something far better than cover from the sky.

When the market emptied, she tipped the unsold stock into the cart and unfolded the soggy receipt to check the drawing. The ink had bled into a blur, but the ring still sat in the middle where Tom had put it. She pressed her palm flat against the closed shutter, rain running over her knuckles, and waited for the other half of the drawing to answer from across the sea.
