Matching arrow tattoos on two forearms
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching arrow tattoos run down the forearms, each with feathered fletching and a diamond shape at its centre. A dotted circle sits behind the diamond, and small letters S appear beside the shafts. The ink is black and grey, shown against a pale textured wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The travelling show had lost its elephant to the river and its tightrope to the damp, so when two boys came to the gate with one tent and two bows, the ringmaster said they could stay until the first frost and no longer. Their names were Tobin and Ansel. They were not brothers, only two children the flood had left on the same bank, and they had carried their father's bows the whole way from the coast.

Every evening they shot a single arrow from the far end of the field, through a painted diamond the size of a cartwheel, while the last lamps guttered. The crowd was thin. A farrier's widow came each night and sat on the same crate. The shafts were fletched with grey goose feathers, and the boys had drawn a ring of chalk dots around the target so the wind could be read by where the dust settled.
In November the ringmaster asked for the trick they had never shown, a shot with the eyes closed. Tobin refused, saying the diamond was for looking through, not for aiming at. Ansel took the bow alone in the cold field. Next morning the widow found two arrows laid side by side on her crate, each shaft marked with a small cut S, and beside them a ledger page on which the ringmaster had written that the show owed nothing more.
The boys were gone up the north road before the frost. Some say they still shoot at dusk in the far field, and that a bird no one has named flies through the painted diamond and comes to rest on the wall of the empty tent.
