Wheat and lavender forearm tattoos
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two forearms show matching botanical tattoos: wheat ears with long leaves on the left and lavender stems with leaves on the right. The linework is fine and the flowers and leaves are softly shaded in muted greens and greys. The photograph is framed tightly on the arms and clasped hands against a dark background.

The hedge between our two fields had been left alone for longer than either of us had farmed them. By June it was thick enough to hide the gate. On your side the wheat had gone pale at the tops, its stalks still a bluish green, and on mine the lavender stood in rows of purple haze so loud with bees that the postman stopped to listen. Every evening you walked the boundary with a stick, checking for rabbits, and every evening I pretended I wasn't watching from the kitchen window.

The council letter arrived in July. The hedge had to come down or be cut back to a yard, because the lane was to be widened for lorries. We argued about it at the gate all afternoon, you pointing with a stalk of wheat, me rubbing a lavender head between my fingers to keep my hands busy. In the end neither of us wanted to be the one who decided, so we agreed to cut it together on the Saturday, one side each.
We worked from opposite ends with hand shears and a borrowed saw. By noon the blackthorn lay in heaps and the air smelled of sap and crushed mint. You found a nest with three speckled eggs and set the branch down so carefully I forgot to be cross. We met in the middle with blistered palms and cut the last stems together, because they had grown into each other and there was no clean way to part them.
That evening I tied the two bunches with garden twine and hung them upside down from a nail in the barn. By October the wheat had dried to a rattle and the lavender had gone grey and sweet, and the whole barn smelled of both fields at once. The lane was widened anyway, and the gate still sticks, but I can walk from my door to yours without going round the long way.
