Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two hands reaching towards each other, one from the left and one from the right, with the fingertips almost touching in the centre. The linework is fine and defined, with soft shading on the knuckles, fingers and palms. The image is black and white and the composition is centred on the limb, with the design sitting horizontally across the skin.

The hall smells of floor polish and the same orange squash as 1998, and you have already found your name card because you were never going to be the one who walks in late. Sadie Quinn is in the corner by the radiator, laughing with her head tipped back exactly as she did in Mr Pell's chemistry lab when the Bunsen burner gave up on them. Nineteen years have passed, and you still know which of her laughs is the real one.

You have carried one unfinished sentence all that time. On the last afternoon of Year 11, behind the sports hall, she said she was going to Leeds, and you said you would think about it. You did think about it, every evening, usually in the wrong order. Now she crosses the room with a paper cup of warm white wine and stops an arm's length away. The gap between you is exactly the width of a held breath.

"You still owe me a Walkman," she says. You tell her you left it in the shed on purpose. Then neither of you moves. You are both leaning towards the middle like the two figures on that painted ceiling in the postcard Mr Pell pinned above the sink, fingers stretched out and never quite touching. Someone bumps your elbow. The DJ starts something from 1997.

You do not close the gap. You hold out your hand for the cup instead, and she passes it over, and your fingers brush hers for a second on the rim of it. "Same time next decade?" she asks. You say yes before she has finished the question.
