Wildflower bouquets on two thighs

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Two matching tattoos show bouquets of wildflowers, including poppies, daisies and slender stems with buds, set above the knees on two legs. The linework is fine and dark, with stippled dotted circles and angular lines framing each arrangement. The ink is black and grey on pale skin, and the bouquets are centred on each thigh against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lane above Harrowby ran between two dry stone walls, and in June the verges were so thick with poppies that the carrier's horse would stop without being asked. Old Mrs Pendry said the flowers belonged to whoever walked them first in the morning, and that a woman who cut more than she could carry would find the stems wilting in her apron by noon.

Ada and Winifred Coyle were twins, and they did not agree about anything except the lane. Each summer they went up with the same tin cups and came back down with bunches tied in string. Ada cut the daisies and the tall agrimony with its yellow spikes. Winifred cut the poppies, always the ones half-open, because she said a closed bud had not yet decided what it was.

The summer the rain came late, the carrier found them both at the crossroads, their bunches sagging, and neither would hand hers to the other. They sat on the wall until the light went. Then Ada took out her pencil and drew a circle on the back of a seed packet, and Winifred, without a word, drew the same circle on hers, and they set the stems inside the rings the way the dew had settled them.

By Michaelmas the bunches were pressed flat in the family Bible, and the circles had become the frame the whole village knew them by. Nobody ever asked which of them had drawn the first. Winifred liked that. Ada said it was the only thing they had ever shared that neither of them had to give back.
