Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are clasped together, with a black band tattoo wrapped around the ring finger of each. The bands are filled with angular, geometric marks in solid black ink, with fine detail visible in the pattern. The image is in black and grey, with pale skin and grey skull ornaments softly out of focus behind the hands.

The cipher had forty-one marks, and Dora had learned every one of them by the time the ferry docked at Grimsby. Her brother Arthur had drawn them on the back of a tide table, angular as broken fences, and made her recite them until she could sleep with her eyes open. "Nobody reads a ring," he said. "Nobody thinks to."

The customs officer at Hull turned her hand over twice, then again, frowning at the black bands cut into her finger and the matching one on Arthur's. He could not read them. Neither could the clerk at the bank, nor the man who sold her the ticket to Leeds. Dora kept her hands still in her lap through the long ride and let the marks sit on her skin the way the lamplighters had taught her to hold a match steady against the wind.

Arthur was waiting on the platform in the wrong coat, a telegram folded small in his palm. He did not speak. He lifted his left hand, turned the ring finger toward her, and tapped the first mark twice with his thumb. Dora answered with three taps of her own. Across the station a porter stopped whistling and looked up at the clock.

The telegram said only that the boat was safe. Dora read it twice, then pressed her thumb to the last mark on her band, the one that meant come home. She folded the paper into her sleeve and let the marks say the rest.
