Matching wave bands on two fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two interlocking hands show a thin black wave line tattooed around one finger on each hand, with the waves in similar positions. The linework is fine and even, with little shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The photograph is taken close up against a warm orange background, with the hands filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marjorie Hale had been at the tiller of the Patience since five, and by the time the lock gates groaned open at Sallow Mill her hands had stopped feeling like her own. Her sister Ida stood on the gunwale with the windlass over one shoulder, shouting the depth at her across the black water. They had both drawn the same wavy line at the back of the Rose and Crown the winter their father's boat was sold, and neither of them had ever admitted it was for him.

The argument had started at breakfast and nobody had finished it. A man from Ely had offered four thousand pounds for the narrowboat and a cheque sat under the teapot, uncashed. Ida said the river was a museum now, all picture postcards and hire fleets. Marjorie said that was exactly why it still needed people who knew where the shallows moved overnight, and that the Patience knew it too, even if nobody else did.

At the top gate the water came in fast and the boat swung, and Ida's rope went slack in her hands. Marjorie threw her own line without thinking and caught her sister's wrist instead of the bollard, and for a moment they hung there over the churning gap, two faces and a boat between them. The surface below rippled in long ridges, exactly the shape of the lines on their fingers, and Marjorie felt the old tidal pull of it in her chest.

When the boat was tied off and the gates had shut behind them, Ida held up her hand in the thin sunlight, the ink dark against her skin. "Same tide, then," she said. Marjorie reached under the teapot in her head, tore up the cheque that wasn't there, and pulled the tiller hard over towards home.
