Geometric finger band tattoos on two hands
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are shown close together, with a thin black band tattoo of angular zigzag and chevron lines wrapped around one finger and a similar band visible on the other hand. The linework is crisp and solid, with no shading. The ink is black against lightly tanned skin, and the plain, light background keeps the focus on the hands.

The contour sheet had gone soft at the folds by the time Mara finished tracing the switchback above Hollin Scar, and she pinned it flat with two boot-nails so the wind off the reservoir couldn't lift it again. Her brother Tobias watched from the bench outside the survey hut, turning a tin cup in his hands and pretending not to count the zigzags she was drawing.

Every bend of that track was a chevron on the paper, sharp at the turn and wide along the run, and the old men in Tarnwick said a path drawn that way never let a mule slip. Mara did not believe in mules. She believed in angles. She had measured the gradient with the brass clinometer their father left her, and she had worked out that the pattern repeated every forty-one paces, which was the only sum in the whole valley that came out even.
When the sheet was finished she took a pen to the margin, wrote the figures in a neat column, and drew a small band of chevrons beside them, the same pattern she had cut into the lintel of the hut the spring their father went up the scar and did not come down. Tobias read it upside down. He said nothing. He only tipped the cup towards her, and she understood it as the sign it was: the path was theirs to walk now.
The next morning she carried the sheet down to the village and nailed it to the post office door, where anyone who needed the high road could find it in the right order. The rain came on before noon and the ink ran in the folds, but the zigzags held, every turn exactly where her numbers had put it.
