By the third week of August the bindings on the Bramley stock had gone soft in the rain, and Mrs Okonedo still wanted every graft checked before the pickers came through. You knelt in the wet grass with a penknife and a roll of waxed twine, peeling back the loops one at a time, looking for the pale green line where the bark had knitted. Your brother worked the far row and talked the whole time about a lorry he meant to buy, so you only half listened.

Halfway down the row you found a graft that had taken cleanly, the scion swollen and bright, and you thought of Nell at the gate with her hand flat on the post, telling you the orchard would be sold by Michaelmas whatever anyone said. She had been grafting these trees since she was eight. She tied every knot in the same double loop, a habit she said her mother taught her, so that a row of her work looked like a line of small locked rings.
On the last afternoon you cut the twine on her tree and found the join healed to a faint seam, almost invisible. You did not tell your brother. You wound a fresh length of twine around the stem in her double loop and left it standing in the long light, the way she would have wanted it marked, a sign that something had been joined and was holding.
