Matching bird and branch wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists sit side by side, each with a near-identical tattoo of two small birds perched on a thin branch. The linework is fine and the birds are filled in solid, with no visible shading. The ink is a single dark tone, and the composition is centred on each wrist against plain pale skin.

Dear Tom,

The Discovery trees are dropping faster than Dad can pick them, so I've been up the ladders since five. The windfalls go to the cider men in Hereford on Thursday, and the rest I've been sorting by hand: bruised ones to the left, sound ones into the crate. You'd laugh at me. I talk to the wasps now.
Yesterday a branch came down off the old Bramley by the gate, clean at the joint, with two birds still sitting on it. One was a blackbird. The other was smaller and browner and wouldn't leave, even when I lifted the whole limb and carried it to the shed. I propped it against the mangle, and this morning the little one was still on the twig, fluffed up as if it had paid rent.
I keep thinking of the summer you climbed the wall at Tanner's farm and I stood below holding the ladder, pretending I wasn't frightened. Mum said we'd never sit still. Look at us now, one in Leeds and one in the orchard, both of us perched somewhere we weren't meant to be.
Mum wants you home for the harvest supper on the twentieth. I told her you'd come if the trains behaved. Bring the good knife with the bone handle, come up the lane, and see the little bird for yourself before it flies off with the rest of the summer.
Love, Nell
