Two swallows on a branch on the wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two small birds, likely swallows, sit side by side on a thin bare branch. The linework is fine and the feathers are shaded with soft grey tones and dark accents on the wings and tails. The piece is in black ink on a pale wrist, with a dark sleeve and blurred dark background framing it.

By three in the morning Ward 7 had settled into its usual hum of drips and far-off trolley wheels, and Agnes Pryce had taken her tea to the stairwell window, where the car park lamps threw orange light onto the wet tarmac. Two swallows had built a mud nest under the guttering above the bins that week. She had watched them come and go all through her breaks, one always sitting on the wire while the other worked.

In bed four, Mr Heald had woken and asked her what time it was, then what the birds were doing. He had farmed near Thorne for forty years before his chest gave out, and he could tell a swallow from a martin with his eyes shut. Agnes told him the one on the wire was keeping watch. He said the wire was a poor perch for it and that they should have a proper branch, the way his mother had kept a pear tree with two nests in it, and he drifted off before she could answer.

At six the sky turned the colour of dishwater. Agnes went back to the window and saw the nearer bird lift off the gutter and settle on the bare wire, then the second bird followed and landed close beside it, close enough that their tails almost touched. She stood there with her cold tea until the handover bell went, and when she came out through the automatic doors at seven they were still there, two dark shapes on the fence, and then they were gone together over the rooftops.
