Matching blue Celtic knots on forearms
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two near-identical Celtic knot designs sit on separate forearms, each made of interlaced looping bands that form a triangular outline around a central six-petal motif. The linework is outlined in dark ink, and the bands are filled with light and mid blue shading that gives them a raised, ribbon-like look. Both tattoos are shown fairly close up against a plain background, with a dark area behind the arms.

Right, sit yourselves down, the lot of you, and mind the urn, it's older than the roof. This is the one about the Hogmanay reel at Kilbrannan Hall, when the floor was still sprung and the fiddler was Angus Tully, who had the bow hand of a drowned man and the patience of a heron.

Two cousins came that year from across the water, Isla Ross and her cousin Eilidh, and they danced the reel as if they had been stitched together at the wrist. Nobody could make the figures tangle like those two. They went under and over, looping through the set, and every time they passed each other their ribbons crossed, six strands in the air at once, a star with its heart still open. The old women said it was a knot you could only tie in the air, and that it would hold as long as neither let go of the other's hand.
Then came the last waltz, and Isla's ribbon snagged on the brass hook of the hall clock. She pulled, and it did not give. Eilidh pulled from the other side, and the two of them stood in the middle of the floor, linked by a loop of blue silk that nobody could see the end of. The fiddle kept playing. The clock kept striking. Angus, who had never once stopped a tune, laid his bow across his knees and waited.
They're still there, if you go up on a Friday with a torch. Look under the boards by the stage. Two triangles, cut into the wood by a knife that was never meant for it, each with a flower in its middle. Nobody has ever found the end of that ribbon, and I have stopped looking. Now, who wants the second half of the flask?
