Compass rose with watercolour splashes on a calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A black and grey compass rose sits on the lower leg, with a long vertical needle running down towards the ankle. Soft blue, green and yellow watercolour splashes spread behind and around the compass, while the compass itself is shaded in grey with fine detailing. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against a wooden floor and a red wall.

You did not argue with him in front of the horses. You sat on the back steps of the last wagon with the brass compass in your lap, the one with the cracked glass, and you counted the towns on the route card that were still willing to take a tent.

Eleven, then nine, then four. The lion went to a sanctuary in Shropshire in a crate that cost more than the lion. Dora, who had been the clown for twenty-two years, took a job at a garden centre and sent postcards of cacti. Every morning you turned the compass slowly until the needle settled, and every morning it pointed at the same wet field behind the lorry park, as if the ground itself wanted to be remembered.
On the last night in Hereford the wind got under the big top and lifted one corner like a held breath. You went out with the torch and found the stakes had pulled clean. The painted star on the front board was running down into the grass, yellow and grey, and the long pole of the old sign pointed straight down at the mud.
You stood there a long time. Then you knelt, pressed the compass flat in the wet, and let it show you which way was home for once: nowhere on the route card, only the dark field and the sound of the rain taking the colour out of everything.
