Matching cats in top hats on two thighs
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two people's thighs show matching tattoos of two cats wearing top hats, with small five-petal flowers on either side. The linework is bold and the cats are shaded in black and grey, giving a vintage engraved look. The left tattoo sits higher on the thigh near the knee, while the right sits mid-thigh, with the wearer's shorts and hand visible above.

The hat had belonged to a bishop's clerk who drowned in the Ouse, and Ada Pell bought it off a barrow for threepence because the lining was still good. She carried it home under her arm like a loaf. That same week the two tomcats from the chapel steps, Mungo and Silas, began quarrelling over who would wear it first.

Mungo was the elder by a whole winter and said so. Silas was quicker on the wall and said that counted for more. They settled it the only way cats in a town like that ever settle anything, by sitting shoulder to shoulder on the windowsill at dusk and refusing to move until the other gave way. Neither did. By morning the hat was on both their heads at once, tipped so far that the brims touched, and Ada found them asleep in the coal scuttle, too stubborn to come down.
The parish clerk wanted them put out. The vicar's wife wanted a likeness of them for the Michaelmas fair, but whenever she lifted her box they sat up with such dignity that she forgot what she had come for. Ada stitched a clover onto the ribbon so they would know which side was theirs, and Silas, who could not read, learned to find it with his nose.
When the spring fairs came round, the two of them walked out past the mill together, one hat, two heads, and nobody in the village ever again asked which brother had the better claim. Each evening after that the hat hung on the nail between the window and the door, clover turned outward, and the pair of them came in off the wall to sit beneath it and argue about whose turn it was, which was the one thing they never settled.
